Red Sea 2 – 3 Muzinga 6
Feb 03 January 26 - February
10, Uganda Champions league of East Africa Last year Simba claimed their sixth CECAFA Club Cup to confirm
their status as the most successful club in the 29-year history of the
competition. The CECAFA Club Cup is an annual competition held between East
and Central African clubs with this year's championship having 13 teams
pooled into three groups. Hosts Uganda and defending champions Tanzania each field two
teams. The top 3 teams
from Group A and the top 2 teams from Groups B and C qualify for the
quarter-finals. The remaining last-eight spot goes to the best third-placed
team from Groups B and C. Red Sea lose to a last minute goal Biniam
Gebreslasie put Red Sea ahead (1-0) at the stroke of half time but danger
man Elias Witanday equalised for Muzinga (1-1) with six minutes from time
to take the game into extra time. Indeed Red Sea were unlucky to come away
victors of this match to play Simba in the Semifinals. In the
first half of extra time Witanday struck again (1-2) in the100th minute but
the Eritreans tied the score again (2-2) through Russom Tewelomedhin on 117
minutes. Luck
was not on Red Seas’ side as the second sub Khaled Mohamed scored in the
final minute of extra-time as Muzinga rallied to victory over Red Sea in a
dramatic and closely contested quarterfinal tie played in the sweltering
heat. Muzinga
of Burundi beat Eritrea’s Red Sea with a dramatic 3-2 victory after 120
minutes of play at the Nakivubo Stadium. However it has been a great
success story, more than a sad ending for the Eritreans.
