Villa the team that lost to Red Sea in-group (3-2) stages has one the
CECAFA cup. Uganda's SC Villa have reclaimed the Cecafa Club
Championship title for the first time in 16 years. First-half substitute
Vincent Tendwa scored the only goal with a strike 15 minutes from time. The
Kenyan striker volleyed home with a shot that gave Simba's goalkeeper Juma
Kaseja no chance. Villa could have taken the lead
much earlier, but Ekotchu Kasongo wasted an opportunity in the 12th minue
by hitting the woodwork. The Tanzanian side had chances of their own, with the
industrious Steven Mapunda forcing a desperate save by Villa's goalkeeper
Postnet Omwony. In the second half, both sides stepped up their game in
search of a goal. Although Simba had more possession, Villa looked the more
dangerous. After scoring, the home side threw everyone behind the ball and
were content to boot the ball down the pitch to use up time. At the final whistle, Simba players closed in on the
Sudanese referee, who had to be protected by the police. The win for Villa,
their first Cecafa title since 1987, earns them $30,000, with Simba getting
$20,000. In the third-place play-off, Burundi's Muzinga FC beat
Ugandas Express FC 4-2 on penalties after the game ended goalless. Red Sea 2 – 3 Muzinga 6

Gebreslasie put Red Sea ahead (1-0) at the stroke of half time but danger
man Elias Witanday equalised for Muzinga (1-1) with six minutes from time
to take the game into extra time. Indeed Red Sea were unlucky to come away
victors of this match to play Simba in the Semifinals. In the
first half of extra time Witanday struck again (1-2) in the100th minute but
the Eritreans tied the score again (2-2) through Russom Tewelomedhin on 117
minutes. Luck
was not on Red Seas’ side as the second sub Khaled Mohamed scored in the
final minute of extra-time as Muzinga rallied to victory over Red Sea in a
dramatic and closely contested quarterfinal tie played in the sweltering
heat. Muzinga
of Burundi beat Eritrea’s Red Sea with a dramatic 3-2 victory after 120
minutes of play at the Nakivubo Stadium. However it has been a great success
story, more than a sad ending for the Eritreans. January 26 -
February 10, Uganda Champions league of East Africa Last year Simba claimed their sixth CECAFA Club Cup to confirm
their status as the most successful club in the 29-year history of the
competition. The CECAFA Club Cup is an annual competition held between East and
Central African clubs with this year's championship having 13 teams pooled
into three groups. Hosts Uganda and defending champions Tanzania each field two
teams. The top 3 teams
from Group A and the top 2 teams from Groups B and C qualify for the quarter-finals.
The remaining last-eight spot goes to the best third-placed team from
Groups B and C.
